As we biked into the city we could feel the buzzing of adreneline in the air. We secured our places in front of a tv and held our breath as the game begun. After a long 120 minutes and14 yellow cards the Spaniards scored in the last 3 minutes of the additional time. The city fell silent as everyone watched in disbelief. Nobody wanted to believe that the ball, that was played off sides, had actually counted as a goal. The silence was short-lived and was followed by lots of shouting, more tension, and a little bit of hope as they played the last 3 minutes. But all good things must come to an end, and unfortunately last night was the end of the glory for the Dutch team.
There was an almost sickening-feeling in the air as the ref blew his whistle to end the game. And even though a few people went home, that didn't stop the party that followed. Fireworks flew throughout the air as Holland showed their pride for making it into the finals again. It's too bad that we lost, but it was awesome to see the unity, sportsmanship, and pride as the Dutch consistently defeated their opponents in earlier games. Now 2 more years until we have a chance at the European championship! We might just have to come back to Holland that summer to watch!
Early in the afternoon the streets started turning orange
